2.06 - Neutrality and intellectual intervention : Denis de Rougemont and the concept of « active neutrality »

Denis de Rougemont (1906-1985), writer, journalist and literary critic, was one of those Swiss intellectuals who defended democracy and the freedom by intervening in the public space although Switzerland’s political authorities propagated the neutrality of the country and tried not to be a provocation to the German Nazi government. We will, first, relate Rougemonts position- takings to his position in the french-speaking Swiss literary field by taking into account the reconnaissance acquise in Paris. Second, we will reconstruct Rougemont’s key-concepts of « federalism » and « neutrality » in order to see how he considers the role of Switzerland in future Europe and the role of the intellectuals in the contemporary social and political transformations. Finally we will characterize the type of intellectual represented by Rougemont by contrasting the concept of the « universal » intellectual and the « collective » intellectual.
