Conference : The contradictions of the globalisation of the publishing industry
The position of translation on the publishing market in Poland after 1989
Author/s : Elżbieta Skibińska
The decay of communism in Poland in 1989 led to many changes in the Poles’ life : some were immediate, like the changes in the social and political system, others were progressive but also quite rapidly visible, like in the economic life, and others, as a consequence of the former, were slower and could be observed only in a long term perspective, like the cultural changes in a general sense. The revolution of 1989 was also and maybe above all an opening to the foreign countries. The end of the “old regime” also meant the end of censorship, and as a consequence, the import of new ideas through the medias, among which the translation of books before unknown. The liberalization of the Polish publishing market (in both significations) made it a factor of global exchanges. Though it was still submitted to global trends, it developed according to its own rules as a result of the country’s proper economic and cultural life. In this paper we tried to present the position of translations in this development process where three phases can be distinguished : “wild” development, regulation, and stabilization with a reinforcement of big companies. During the three phases translations had a different function. We tried to show it focusing on the following factors : - the number of publishers and the amount of translations they published - the source languages - the kinds of translated works - the translators: their profiles and positions, their relationships with the publishers - the influence of translations on the Polish literature production.
