Dramatic exports and cultural domination: Paris capital city of Europe (Second half of XIXth century)?
Author/s : Christophe Charle
The standard history of literature is focussed on novel and poetry and a nation-centric vision. Up to now it has forgotten to analyse the intense circulation of operas and dramatic works all over Europe. A non-normative and objectivist approach allows to get a more balanced viewpoint and to enhance the importance of literary exchanges through performing arts at a European scale. To understand the new geography of imports and exports between France (i.e. Paris) and the other nations, we must get rid of the economic scheme free trade vs protectionism. It is necessary to situate these relations in the larger framework of the relations of cultural, political and social domination existing between the audiences, the realms of imagination and the represented societies on the theatre scenes. This will be sketched thanks to examples borrowed from lyrical and theatrical repertory in the second half of 19th century.
