Mann, Kafka, Brecht: the import of German literature in the Italian literary field in the post-war years (1945-1948)

In the immediate post-war period Italy does not import almost any new German writer, whereas there is a rush to translate French and American authors such as Sartre and Hemingway. Apart from some short texts by Bertolt Brecht, the attention of the literary world is focused on well known authors, already translated in the Thirties, such as Thomas Mann and Franz Kafka, who for different reasons had catalysed the antifascist feelings of a whole generation. Mann, Kafka and Brecht occupy a foreground place on the pages of «Politecnico» (the review directed by Elio Vittorini and published by a still young Einaudi house) which, by its standpoint for a “new culture” and by its idea of a free relation between “politica e cultura” provokes many and lively reactions in the literary and political world. The analysis of the positions taken by Vittorini and his counterparts about Mann, Kafka and Brecht makes it possible to highlight the structure of the Italian literary field in this period and to recall some specific trends of the italian reception of German literature, whose effects are still actual.
